Breaking News: 1,100+ notable signatories just signed an open letter asking “all AI labs to immediately pause for at least 6 months”

Elon Musk's petition is gaining ground.

Hello Everyone,

This is breaking News to report.

Recently more than 1,100 signatories, including Elon Musk, Steve Wozniak, and Tristan Harris of the Center for Humane Technology, have signed an open letter that calls on “all AI labs to immediately pause for at least 6 months the training of AI systems more powerful than GPT-4.” Says the letter:

People are clearly getting worried at what Generative A.I. set into the wild by companies like OpenAI and Microsoft will do to us.

It appears like GPT-4 has spooked a lot of people who work in BigTech and the impact it and LLMs will have on the internet, society and so forth.

Artificial intelligence labs have been urged by Elon Musk and numerous other tech industry figures to stop training AI systems more powerful than GPT-4, OpenAI’s latest large language model.

Elon Musk Wants to Pause A.I. Development

  • In an open letter signed by Musk and Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, technology le//aders urged for a six-month pause to the development of such advanced AI, saying it represents a risk to society.

We call on all AI labs to immediately pause for at least 6 months the training of AI systems more powerful than GPT-4.

They go on: “AI research and development should be refocused on making today's powerful, state-of-the-art systems more accurate, safe, interpretable, transparent, robust, aligned, trustworthy, and loyal.”

Over 1,000 affiliated folk in the space have now signed the petition.

CNBC notes that the Future of Life Institute is a nonprofit organization based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, that campaigns for the responsible and ethical development of artificial intelligence. Its founders include MIT cosmologist Max Tegmark and Skype co-founder Jaan Tallinn.

Do you support the Petition that we should "Pause" training of advanced LLMs after GPT-4 to handle A.I. Governance and regulation issues before it gets more dangerous?

Who has Signed it?

Signatories include (reported by the Verge) author Yuval Noah Harari, Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, Skype co-founder Jaan Tallinn, politician Andrew Yang, and a number of well-known AI researchers and CEOs, including Stuart Russell, Yoshua Bengio, Gary Marcus, and Emad Mostaque.

GPT-4, which was released earlier this month, is thought to be far more advanced than its predecessor GPT-3. Some fear its impact on society without the proper Governance, controls and safeguards.

Musk has previously said he thinks AI represents one of the “biggest risks” to civilization.

Safeguarding Humanity from more Risky A.I.

The petition goes on:
